The Wonderful Exotic Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranates are the latest super food to excite the senses and offer a rich source of nutritional benefits. The wonderful exotic pomegranate juice provides a great health advantage. The antioxidant potential is 3 times higher than green tea and red wine. The challenge for the home juicer is in the juicing of this unique fruit.

Juicing

Pomegranates are large vibrant red domes filled with seeds cocooned in translucent juice sacs, known as arils. The flavor is in the juice concentrate and when released, the juice is delightfully sweet with a tart bite depending on the ripeness of the fruit. The Wonderful variety grown in California produces a rich crimson juicy fruit with a wealth of flavor. One large pomegranate can make up to 1/2 cup of fresh juice. The worst thing about the juice is that it stains everything including your hands - so be careful!

Juice the fruit by slicing off the crown and cutting the fruit into quarters. To reduce staining, place in a bowl of water and remove the seed sacs (arils) from the bitter white membrane. Strain the arils from the water and consume the pure concentrate as is or refrigerate up to 3 days. Alternatively you can juice pomegranates on a citrus juicer by cutting the fruit in half and pressing with a citrus press. As with citrus, the skin and white pith can then be discarded. Fresh pomegranate juice can be frozen for up to 6 months. The best pomegranate varieties for juicing are Wonderful, Foothill Early and Spanish Sweet.
